Global EV Registrations Decline Amid Policy Shifts in China and U.S.
Electric vehicle registrations fell 3% globally in January to 1.2 million units, marking the first downturn since 2022. China's EV market contracted 20% to under 600,000 units—its lowest volume in two years—as purchase taxes and reduced subsidies took effect. The U.S. decline was more severe at 33%, with just 85,000 units sold.
Automakers exposed to U.S. markets are retreating from EV commitments, absorbing $55 billion in writedowns for 2025. Trade tensions and regulatory uncertainty under the TRUMP administration are cited as primary headwinds. BMI data confirms the correction coincides with protectionist measures in both nations.
